Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor's referral for online therapy, virtual therapy, to see an online therapist ? Do I need a referral to see a psychotherapist ? No. Our psychotherapy referral service can be done yourself. Self referral for psychotherapy with Canada Online Therapy is done by a doctor, the client, or a client's friend, family. You may however need a doctor's referral to claim your insurance reimbursements. Please check with your insurance provider, plan. What is a referral in counseling ? What is a therapy referral ?Referral mental health care ? Mental health care referral, therapy referral, counselling referral means you or your family member, a person who is not your doctor can also make your appointment.

Do you offer free 15 minute consultation therapy like other therapists ? Apologies, we do not. In rare circumstances, if we feel less than 100% we are able to assist you, we will end our first session with you and not charge for this session. If you come back after the first or second session reporting there are no improvements, you will not be rebooked again. We have carried a retention rate of over 95% for nearly two years. This means, over 95% of our clients are rebooking. We use empirically proven methods. Empirically proven means, we use methods that work for most people. From experience, 15 minutes does not allow us enough time to fully assess the case, offer observations, treatment plan forward, exercises that will be useful we can lend to you, so they will be in your pocket for life. Canada Online Therapy is not in the business of collecting clients. We are in the business of making sure we are persistently firing ourselves from cases because the client is learning how to become their own therapist so they can do this, for the next presenting issue.

I have never done therapy before what should I expect ? Expect to be nervous at first, and to walk out of your first session feeling comfortable with your therapist, trusting they know what they are doing, knowing what to expect from your sessions going forward. Part of our jobs as therapists is to make sure we feel, with you. So we meet you where you are, go with the flow to model this for you, adaptability, flexibility.

How often should you go to psychotherapy ? How often is therapy needed ? The frequency of therapy depends on the presenting issue. Usually once a week or more if the presenting concern is urgent until we see improvements. Usually we see improvements in the first few sessions. Then we go to every other week or every few weeks. If the case is not serious, we can go every other week or every few weeks until you feel your scope of work is completed, success measure have been accomplished or move to another scope of work. Concrete factors also are considered such as preference, scheduling capacity, your insurance plan, coverage, living expenses.

I'm feeling better, do I need therapy anymore ? As therapists ultimately the goal is to really, never see you again, or know you are coming to therapy because you want therapy, not need therapy. Unfortunately, the trend is when people stop coming to therapy when they start feeling better, is the same clients who keep feeling worse, and coming back when they feel worse. These are the same clients we see that unconsciously, subconsciously or consciously but won't admit it have the worst stigma against mental health, mental health therapy. Feeling good, does not mean you don't need therapy. It may mean you have successfully stabilized yourself. Where we may wish to go is to ensure we are healing old pains so you are not triggered anymore, reactive to the triggers, aware when and why the triggers are happening to protect yourself, you are leveling up, elevating your mood so your previous higher end becomes your new lower end.

I haven't booked in a while, I feel a bit embarrassed to rebook ? A good therapist will walk away from each session giving it all back to the client. Just as we close each session, so we can go about our own lives, we also close cases, if the client never chooses to come back. However, remember we are a resource like any other resource, and it is only the stigma surrounding mental health, there is a negative perception surrounding this. This being said, a librarian or dentist would never judge you or say, where the heck have you been. Or your dentist would never say gross you have plaque. They are happy you are doing something about it. Therapists are the same, they don't blink an eye when we see clients a month or years down the road. We are always happy to see you no matter circumstance, there is no judgement for lapse of time.

How many sessions should I book ? We recommend 4 in advance at a time. This way, you can incorporate this into your routine. Usually most people are in the pre-contemplation cycle of change for the largest part of the process. So we want you to opt into ideas; we know ideas, are very powerful. Some clients like to go slow, with booking one at a time. There is a pattern however these clients, progress is slower. We as therapists, respect your process, so there's really no pressure or deadlines, unless there is short term or long term disabilities involved and your financial security is at stake. Please keep in mind, the closer we get to a date, we close off the days to ensure we are giving quality care and arriving for our clients at our optimum. We are weary of becoming a business where the demand exceeds the supply/service, as we can see service go down in these types of business structures. We are protecting our growth wisely, are careful who we admit into our practice. We wish very much you do the same, you choose carefully, you arrive at your best to maximize on your work, allow it to be long lasting, doing your work in between sessions.

Do you have to have something wrong to go to therapy? Is there something wrong with me I need therapy ? No & No. This kind of thinking comes from stigma surrounding therapy. The question really should be why is there a stigma around therapy ? Perhaps it has much to do with our context, history, where we come from. While we work towards answering this question of why, just understanding the stigma associated with seeking therapy, knowing there is, is a good start to breaking the stigma. How can stigma affect people's willingness to seek treatment ?Usually negative, avoidant, fear of judgement. Keeping things private is an option, while you are processing how you feel about it yourself so you can give yourself time and space to process your personal experience. Remember, stress, is usually the compounding exasperating factor in all aliments. We want to reduce stress, know how to manage, know why it triggers us so much, so we can "be like water my friend" - Bruce Lee.

I'm scared to feel bad after talking about bad things. I don't want to ruin my mood. Any advice on this ? In therapy we are re-establishing our associations with emotions. Yet, we don't go into anything you don't want to go into. We open things up responsibly, we close judiciously. Much of therapy is recreating positive associations with negative perceptions of processes. There are lots of therapy approaches that come at therapy with, there are really no bad experiences or emotions, and tools and techniques to lend to you to see these experiences as opportunities to grow, expand, become connected with yourself. In many ways therapy is about connecting with yourself, so you can connect with others more intimately. Therapy is also about expanding your tolerance, capacity for so called negative emotions, not be so reactive but more responsive so you can be truly emotionally independent and strong, supporting yourself genuinely. If we develop this we come at all relationships happily, happy with ourselves and the world, secured sense of self. This is surprisingly quite rare. Authentic Confidence. We want to be weary of toxic positivity. The popular Good Vibes Only. What that usually is, is repression, suppression waiting to explode into anger, resentment. Emotions are like a fuse, we don't want to bust the fuses, we want natural release, discipline, this is true control, mastery, self acceptance.
