FAQ: EFT-C therapy

What is Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy?

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) helps couples to build strong,
healthy relationships by exploring and changing emotional dynamics to enhance mutual understanding and closeness.

What is the history of EFT-C ?

EFT was developed by Sue Johnson and Les Greenberg in the mid-1980s.
Research suggests that EFT is the most effective couples therapy,
with 90% of couples seeing a significant improvement in their relationship.

Does emotionally focused therapy work for couples?

It's effective in treating individuals (EFIT), couples (EFCT), and families (EFFT),
addressing a wide range of issues from marital distress to individual anxiety and trauma.
EFT offers a clear, structured path to helping clients.

What are the 9 steps of emotionally focused couples therapy?

The 9 steps that make up EFT are:
(1) assessment,
(2) identifying the negative cycle,
(3) accessing primary emotions in this cycle,
(4) framing the cycle as the common enemy and creating conflict de-escalation,
(5) deepening engagement with primary attachment emotions,
(6) structuring the acceptance of these emotions by the other partner,
(7) enacting these “new” emotions to create new positive trusting cycles,
(8) consolidating changes into new stories and
(9) attachment rituals and resolving pragmatic problems from the new secure base offered by the restructured relationship.
