For Canadian residents with a valid provincial health card like an MSI card in Nova Scotia, a GP referral to a specialist is completely free.
Basic medical services and their corresponding referral processes are fully covered by the public healthcare system.
However, there are a few exceptions where you might incur a fee:Uninsured Services: If you are not a Canadian resident or require a special, non-medical letter to bypass wait times, some providers may charge an administrative fee or the processing and writing of the paperwork.
Virtual Platforms & Private Clinics: If you do not have a family doctor and use a private virtual service or a private clinic to secure a referral, consultation and referral fees can range from $100 to $200.
Allied Health Professionals: You generally do not need a physician's referral to see allied health professionals like physiotherapists, chiropractors, or massage therapists unless your insurance plan requires you to request for a service.
If you choose to go to a doctor to request one anyway, they may charge a small processing fee. If you do not have a family doctor, usually you can ask for a referral from a walk-in clinic NP or from these primary healthcare services doctors.
"Psychotherapy refers to planned and structured interventions aimed at influencing behaviour, mood and emotional patterns of reaction to different stimuli through verbal and non-verbal psychological means. Psychotherapy does not comprise the use of any biochemical or biological means."

🌎
The following is my interpretation (Lee Park) as a clinician of 16 years experience is that this definition means that psychotherapy is a way to help people by talking and interacting with them, using the technology of language, attachment, relational guidance:
Here's a breakdown:
"Planned and structured interventions": Psychotherapy is not casually chatting.
Psychotherapy is a deliberate clinical process based in evidence practice.
The psychotherapy we offer investigates as quickly as possible root causes to symptoms to treat these root causes with the latest art and science of psychotherapy.
"Influencing behaviour, mood and emotional patterns": The end goal for psychotherapy is to help motivate change, in a person's thoughts, feelings, and reactions. Usually this always involves developing a partnering relationship with awareness as the antidote to protect oneself from escalations from harmful cycles of behaviour. I find it helpful to ensure my clients are connected to their emotions, bodies and their cues, to encourage this relationship to become intimate.
"Verbal and non-verbal psychological means": The tools used in psychotherapy are communication, interaction, the relationship between the clinician and client and the synergy they create—words, actions, and the professional relationship itself.
"Does not comprise... any biochemical or biological means": This clearly distinguishes psychotherapy from medical treatments like prescription medication. Psychotherapy uses the client's innate resources to heal their own symptoms from understanding the context of how things began, developed, how they coped from stressors, where they believe they can change, to follow through in this change.
Our 15-year clinical perspective attempts to distill the World Health Organization definition of psychotherapy.
We transition the clinical definition into a human-centric philosophy, emphasizing active collaboration over passive listening.
1. Planned, Structured Interventions
Psychotherapy is a deliberate clinical process.
Psychotherapy provides targeted Clinical Focuses and Concerns: Psychotherapy bypasses casual conversation to systematically investigate the root causes of distress. Psychotherapy relies on evidence-based practice to apply targeted, structured techniques, exercises so clients can become their own therapist.
2. Influencing Behavior, Mood, and Emotional Patterns
Psychotherapy's core objective is to motivate tangible change.
Psychotherapy's clinical focus and foundation is developed from the therapeutic process fosters self-awareness. This tool of heightened awareness helps clients step back, interrupt harmful cycles, and actively guide their own emotional responses to liberate themselves from patterns that may have been developed from past trauma responses.
3. Verbal and Non-Verbal Psychological Means
Psychotherapy's primary technology is from communication and therapy alliance building.
Psychotherapy's Clinical Focus develops a secured therapeutic alliance, attachment support, and relational guidance act as the primary catalysts for healing. The synergy between clinician and client is often what drives progress. The clinician's unconditional positive regard is carried out from the client to themselves to the outer world.
4. Distinct from Biochemical Manipulations
Psychotherapy strictly relies on interweaving bio-psycho-social-medical methods.
Psychotherapy empowers clients to draw upon their own strength-based innate resources.
Through understanding how challenges developed, in the context they happened, we explore current coping mechanisms, and planning actionable changes, clients learn to self-heal adjacent to pharmaceuticals or decide to heal without them. We differentiate our practice by not only offering coping mechanisms but a solid understanding of how to process emotions, past trauma to ensure our clients are not only coping, but understand how to process challenges to heal from them.
Talk therapy is an effective tool for retraining emotional and behavioral habits.
